Total Health Packs for Better Eyesight

Researchers have found that certain eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome or macular degeneration may be slowed or prevented altogether by certain vitamins and minerals.

The following nutrients are all contained in the Total Health Pack and the information is all supported by research and clinical studies.

Vitamin A helps improves night vision and reduces the risks of cataracts.

Note:  There is 5,000 IU Vitamin A in each Total Health Pack.

Vitamin C slows down the progression of macular degeneration when taken in combination with other antioxidants (like vitamin A and E). Vitamin C also lowers the risk of cataracts and may impact the development of glaucoma.

Note:  There is 900 mg of calcium ascorbate and 180 mg of bioflavonoids in each Total Health Pack.

Vitamin D3:As of January 2012, the research on vitamin D3 has only been done on mice, but the results are still promising. The researchers found that vitamin D helped in the reduction of potentially damaging cells (macrophages). These cells have been linked to inflammation which is something that you do not want to take place in your eyes.

Researchers also saw was a decrease in the amount of toxic molecule (amyloid beta) deposits. The deposits of this molecule will collect in your system as you age.

Together these findings are very encouraging because when these two factors come together they are the main cause for age related macular degeneration (AMD).

Given that we have so much data on how vitamin D3 helps us with so many other health issues, isn’t it encouraging that our daily dosage is also helping the health of our eyes?

Note:  There is 500 IU of Vitamin D in each Total Health Pack.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that slows the progression of macular degeneration and protects against cataracts when taken with other antioxidants like vitamin C and lutein (more on lutein later).

Note:  There is 400 IU of d’alpha tocopherol vitamin E in each Total Health Pack.

Zinc helps decrease the risk of night blindness and the development of macular degeneration. It also slows down the progression of cataracts.

Note:  There is 5mg of Zinc in each Total Health Pack.

Selenium in combination with antioxidants like vitamins A and C, works to decrease the risk of macular degeneration.

Note:  There is 50 mcg Selenium in each Total Health Pack.

Omega-3 fatty acids have a protective effect against advanced macular degeneration (AMD). Omega-3 fats will also benefit eye health because of its anti-inflammatory effects

Note:  There is 180 EPA:120 DHA Omega 3’s in each Total Health Pack.

Carotenoids are phytochemicals (chemicals found in plants) commonly found in certain fruits and vegetables that provide the red, orange and yellow colors of these foods. Two carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk for age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 55.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found primarily in broccoli, corn, squash and dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale.

The highest accumulation of lutein and zeaxanthin in the body is in the eye. They are concentrated in the central region of the retina, in a spot known as the macula lutea, or yellow spot. The macula helps produce the sharp central vision needed for activities like reading, sewing and driving.

**The retina is the layer of cells in the back of the eyes responsible for detecting light, which in turn allows you to see.

Therefore, increasing the concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin in your eyes may prevent the devastating vision loss caused by age-related macular degeneration.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that easily crosses into the tissues of the eye and exerts its effects safely and with potentially more potency than lutein and zeaxanthin.

Astaxanthin has been found to have protective benefits against a number of eye-related problems, including: cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, cystoids macula edema, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinal arterial occlusion, venous occlusion and inflammatory eye diseases such as retinitis, iritis, keratitis and scleritis.

There are only two main sources of astaxanthin: the microalgae that produce it, and the sea creatures that consume the algae (such as salmon, shellfish, and krill).

Ginkgo biloba has been shown to slow down vision loss.

Antioxidants from Bilberry and Black Currant

The most noted water-soluble antioxidants for the eye are found in black currant and bilberry. They are important for eye health because they are soluble in the thick watery substance filling the space between the lens and the cornea. This substance (the aqueous humor) maintains the intraocular pressure, provides nutrition for other ocular tissues and serves to transport antioxidants.
